We Are Many...

Dear Circle of Hope,

In 1985 the Uniting Church in Australia declared itself to be a multicultural church. So for over 40 years now we have seen ourselves not as monocultural but multicultural! This means that people of every culture, every race, every ethnicity…all people, are welcomed and included as they are into our church and her communities. It also means that all people can participate actively in the life of our communities in all ways, independent of their cultural identity. In fact they are encouraged to bring this identity, as who they are, to the table as a blessing to all. Now we still have a long way to go to enact this in our practice and experience, but we have made some progress and there is a mandate for this to continue.

In recent years leaders around the world have made statements based on fear and ‘othering’ to misguide people around immigration, refugees and the presence of various cultures within their societies. Unfortunately, this kind of misinformation and fear-based rhetoric has surfaced here in Australia causing pain, confusion and ultimately the spreading of lies. As an ordained Uniting Church in Australia minister I stand with people around our country who are at this time finding the language of politicians, leaders and the media hurtful and untruthful. We are a multicultural church who ministers in a multicultural nation that has been deeply formed by the rich diversity of a myriad of cultures and we are indeed the better for this!

I am a second generation Australian whose family migrated to Australia so that their descendants could live freely and flourish. I am thankful for this heritage and will do what I can to ensure that others have the same opportunity. May we all show loving kindness and compassion as we engage with issues like this one, ensuring that all people feel welcomed, included and valued.
